A pro-family leader is appalled that former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman subverted the party's position on traditional marriage while hiding his own homosexuality. Peter LaBarbera adds that current GOP head Michael Steele is misguided in applauding Mehlman's behavior while failing to acknowledge the many ex-homosexuals who provide a positive example. Study Shows Homosexuals Can Change

Outrage by Activists Greets These Important Findings

In a study of 200 people who identified themselves as former homosexuals, a prominent Columbia University researcher has found that most have indeed successfully changed to heterosexual feelings and behavior.

Robert Spitzer, M.D. presented his findings at the 2001 annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in May. Spitzer had re-considered the issue after talking with ex-homosexual picketers at an APA conference several years ago. The respected psychiatrist who describes himself as an atheist, humanist, and supporter of homosexual preferences for those who desire them, spearheaded the APA's controversial 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

The study examined the 143 men and 57 women, and found that 89 percent of the men and 95 percent of the women either had slight or no remaining homosexual feelings. He found that 66 percent of the men and 44 percent of the women had achieved what he termed good heterosexual functioning.

Homosexual activists, including those who are psychiatrists, have expressed outrage over the study, claiming it was biased because the subjects were solicited largely from contacts with Exodus International, NARTH, and other groups that oppose homosexuality. Some activists have sent hate mail to Dr. Spitzer, and are even trying to get him dismissed at Columbia. They insist that homosexuality cannot be changed, even though most hold the position that no one knows what causes the desires.

Ironically, those who have championed the cause of sexual freedom and see evidence of sexual fluidity among celebrities, become stodgy moralists when a person wants to explore and affirm heterosexual desires! This says a lot about what the Spitzer study provides: more evidence of the truth that homosexuality is just a desire and not an inborn identity, a truth that threatens the foundations of the aggressive "gay" agenda.

Implications for Youth: Those who have followed the debate know there is overwhelming evidence that homosexuality, cross-dressing, and other abnormal sexual attractions arise from traumatic childhood experiences and psychological issues left unresolved, often including sexual molestation. In addition, reckless experimentation is now another path into homosexuality, the legacy of the culture's heavy promotion to our youth. This has enormous implications about how we deal with this issue with our children and teens.

Activists insist that we should welcome homosexual desires among teens and even small children, and that if we don't, depression and even suicide attempts are the result. We contend otherwise. In fact, entry into homosexuality and being told it's unchangeable can quickly cause despair, and there's every evidence those drawn to it are unstable already and need help for a whole host of problems, homosexual desire among them.

Homosexuality is a moral, social, medical, psychological and spiritual risk to all who engage in it. Given a sex-saturated culture and the increase in dysfunctional families, more and more youth are likely to be drawn to deviant sexuality of all types, and more likely to be molested as we allow open homosexuals to teach, coach or lead youth organizations.

We must contact schools and insist that counselors and teachers advise students of their rights to know that they can overcome homosexual desires. Schools that don't tell students this put them at great risk. We must as responsible caretakers of our children work to overturn laws that don't "discriminate" against "sexual orientation" in schools. Of course we must discriminate against this behavior! While treating everyone with civility and the dignity God gave them, we must simultaneously reject employment of homosexual teachers, and not support this behavior among students.

Every child struggling with same sex desire has the right to know it is changeable.
