Misinformation, 'Tolerance' and the ACLU Trump Common Sense
What happens when a “gay-straight alliance” suddenly emerges as a proposal in your town’s high school? And a group of parents do everything they can to prevent such a vehicle for deception from being established?
One parent in a Pennsylvania school district gave us the following “post-mortem” after a school board meeting where starting a ”GSA” was on the agenda:
“It passed on a vote of 6 to 3. I sent thank you’s to the three that took a stand against it. The other six seemed convinced they had no choice and/or were sympathetic to the kids[who proposed the club]. A Catholic man was just installed at the previous meeting and he said he was voting for it because he just took an oath of office pledging to ‘uphold the constitution.’ When another board member said that they had other options, his retort was ‘Yes, we could break the law.’
“All three local papers had front page articles the next day. At least one said there was someone there from the ACLU handing out some type of literature. I was not aware of that and I don't think most of the other people that came out were either. I would imagine the board was quite aware of what was going on. They had a brief
‘executive session’ about ten minutes long before the meeting...probably to hear from their attorney. I feel pretty sure they all knew how they were going to vote before the meeting ever started. I had e-mailed a letter to every member stating, ‘once you open the door, how do you monitor the traffic?’ I am praying that some of the Christian kids will start an ‘Allies Too’ club and also participate in the Day of Truth. I truly feel that perhaps all of the board members that voted in favor of the club are ignorant of the gay agenda.
“They asked a student from the Shippensburg club to speak. She told them that the name-calling and harassment had significantly declined in the four years they have had their GSA club and they volunteer at the animal shelter. The student asking for this club was also asked to speak and tell them his goals for the club. He told them they really just wanted a place where they could get together and support one another. He said they don't have to do any of the things the national organization suggests and it's not about sex ... but he said he definitely plans to participate in the Day of Silence. Oh, the evils that are flourishing in the name of tolerance!
“There were three homosexual adults that spoke that night ... a woman in her sixties, a man probably in his late 40s whose nephew quit school over the taunts, and a black man probably in his 40 or 50s that said 50 years ago he would not have been allowed to speak. I'm sure they engendered a lot of sympathy. The newspaper reported an estimated 100 people in attendance. We [the opposing parents] had also submitted petitions with over 500 signatures.
“I don't think it helped that at least three board members watched [TV movie]‘Prayers for Bobby’ the week before.
“A majority of the people who spoke against the club read scripture and said that homosexual behavior was against God's law. I agree, but I don't think that was helpful as most of our population believes the separation of church and state lie. I tried to stress the dangerous, unhealthy behavior and that it has not been proven to be
genetic but I didn't feel like they were really even listening.”
[Editor's Note: There is nothing in the Constitution that indicates a school should establish clubs for kids endorsing homosexuality. Nor is this a positive way to end harassment, if indeed those claims are true.]
